![]() The caption command allows you to title your table. You can change the “skip=” parameter to whatever distance suits your document layout, and you can also apply the same modifications to table captions (change “figure” to “table” and, if your preference is to put your table captions above your table, as is proper,, use “aboveskip=2pt” instead of “skip=6pt”). The body of the table is made up of whatever text, LaTeX commands, etc., you wish. To start, you can invoke the “caption” package in your preamble. As some have mentioned in the comments, the List of Tables lists captions if you dont have a caption, it wont know what to list.In any case, its the caption command that writes an entry to the lot file, and thats what LaTeX inputs to form the List of Tables when you issue listoftables. Not bad – but there are a few ways we can make it better. (Note: for instructions on how to create beautiful native LaTeX figures using GNUplot, see my post here!) After discovering how to include graphics and attach a caption to any figure, I likely Googled “latex bold caption labels” when I noticed that the default LaTeX behavior did not match that of many of the chemistry journals I was seeking to emulate. If you’re new to LaTeX, using the toolbar in Visual Editor (option 1) is a great way to get started. Writing the LaTeX code for the table in Code Editor. Copying and pasting a table from another document while using Visual Editor. The default name that appears at the start of the caption is the type. There are three ways you can insert tables in Overleaf: Using the Insert table button in the editor toolbar. It is always good practise to add a caption to any figure or table. Hopefully that will help others running into this problem in the current version. ![]() The “caption” package is one of the first packages I found when I began learning LaTeX. The tabular environment that was used to construct the tables is not a float by default. In my current version of Miktex (and when pushed up to overleaf), compilation would stall and hang without adding the '\\' after the caption command.
